19 people came out to hike on Mother's Day. It was a very nice warm day without mosquitos!

Twenty-seven hikers including six guests came out for the easy two hour trip on the Piderny Trail – South-West Loop.

The Ramblers first hike of the season had 26 participants. We took the Greenway Trail for just over 2 km, and then took the Western Loop past the “Whose Home” interpretive trail to Forests for the World, the look-out platform, down past the water tower and back to the Greenway Trail parking area.

Although the weather was cloudy with rain at lower elevations and snow falling higher up, with no views of the surrounding mountains once on the ridge – we nevertheless had an enjoyable day of snowshoeing.

Some of the current rotation of Katimavik volunteers showed interest in visiting The Cliff located off the Blue Spruce Trail, so we set off Saturday morning and did the trip in two hours out and back. Snow is fast receding and we managed without snowshoes.

With winter hanging on by the skin of her teeth, we set out on snowshoes to find Mystery Lake somewhere between the Willow River Interpretive Trail and the Wildlife viewing area about a 30 minute drive east of Prince George on Highway 16.

Seven people decided to explore the Ancient Forest Trail and beyond. It was a nice crisp day, and the sun was out. It was perfect for snowshoeing!

Eleven of us began our snowshoe trip at the the Blue Cedar campground near Art Knapps, with the Greenway Trail parking area, 4 kilometers away, our destination.

The Katimavik volunteers were unable to join us on our scheduled snowshoe trip to Willow River on Sunday, so instead, on Saturday I took them on an unofficial hike on some of the informal trails off the Greenway and Blue Spruce Trails.

Seventeen of us snowshoed the Willow River Interpretive Trail, then through the forest to the Wildlife Lookout area a few kilometres west. There was plenty of evidence of rabbit activities in the forest, which would explain the wolf-prints we saw along the way.

It was a nice mild day for the nine of us to try for the summit of Tabor Mountain. We took the Hickory Wing Ski trail 2 km east of Tabor Mountain Ski hill to reach the summit.

A group of 18 came out to snowshoe through Eskers Park, and, as the faces in the pictures show, it was nice to be out with the weather not exactly warm, but a lot less cold than earlier in the week!

The planned trip to Sugarbowl had to be changed due to a washout on the highway at Kenneth Creek. Eleven hikers met early in the morning to decide where we would hike. We weren’t going to let the bad weather stop us!

The hike to Paradise Ridge and Mount Monroe that was planned on the Canada Day weekend did not happen quite on schedule due to a dismal weather forecast and even worse turnout.

19 people were on the hike. Lovely day, sun and no rain. Some snow patches along the ridge. A few avalanche lilies out, but still a lot more to flower along the ridge. Mosquitoes were out; the only spot where you were left alone was right at the top.

Nine Ramblers were joined by a contingent of twelve young volunteers from the Katimavik organization for the Piderny hike – several of whom had participated in the trail-building workshop the previous day hosted by the Prince George Cycling Club.

Sixteen hikers drove to Quesnel under overcast skies, crossed the very swollen Fraser River on the Moffat Bridge, into a blue sky day.

As we headed for the ancient Chinlac village site, the swollen Puttah Creek rushed head-long to the gentle meandering Nechako River.Along the way we saw the scattered remains of two deer that had seen their last winter. The weather sent silent showers of gentle drizzle to cool us without soaking us.

21 hikers joined the hike on Fraser Mountain. As anticipated, there was snow as we walked up, but we didn’t need to use any snowshoes. The skies were clear and we had some spectacular views of Fraser lake at the various view points along the way.

The original planned hiking trip from UNBC to Otway Road was changed to a 10 km loop from the UNBC parking lot to the Blue Spruce Campground and back. There was too much snow on the Greenway trail and it would slowed us right down.

The Ramblers had their last scheduled snowshoe trip for the winter of 2010/2011 at Driscoll Ridge on Sunday April 24, 2011. We began at the "Broken Tree" trailhead about a kilometer east of the Ancient Forest parking area, and headed south up to an old burn area about 2 km east of the East-End summit of the Driscoll Trail.

On Sunday April 17, nine Ramblers snowshoed the Viking Trail up to the Caribou Meadows, lunched at the ice and snow-covered lake, then ascended Viking Ridge above the lake.

Nowell has spent hundreds of hours since 2006 organizing the building of the Ancient Forest Trail on Hwy. 16, 115 km. east of P.G. He has personally coordinated work crews, researched and received funding to build
time” in the summer and fall seasons to do this. I call Nowell “an angel in disguise.” He definitely deserves a “Shining Star” Award.

Graduating students from the Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management 412 program at the University of Northern British Columbia recently raised $862.00 to help the Caledonia Ramblers toward purchase of materials for the Universal Boardwalk being constructed at the Ancient Forest Trail.

Our snowshoe trip to Forest for the World began with a winter view of Shane Lake, then taking the loop trail around it past Reflection Lake and west onto the "Who's Home" Interpretive Trail; from here we headed east past the Lookout Junction and back to the parking area.

On Saturday thirty-six students from the Student Life Program at UNBC joined the Ramblers for a snowshoe trip beginning on the Greenway Trail and on unofficial trails to The Cliff, then onto Art Knapps who had kindly offered us the use of their facilities and parking area where UNBC had refreshments waiting for us.

A full week-end of snowshoeing began Friday with the Ramblers Trailbreaking Crew opening up the route around the Ancient Forest Trail after heavy snowfall had completely hidden the trail.

The Caledonia Ramblers first ever trip to Slim Creek Provincial Park took place on Sunday February 20, 2011 as an exploratory snowshoe trip. The day dawned as a cool minus 20 Celsius and cloudy in town, but was sunny all day at Slim Creek where it warmed up to a very pleasant minus ten by afternoon.

Fourteen of us began our trip around the Ancient Forest by once again restoring the outhouse as a functional feature by freeing its entrance from the grip of winter.

Fourteen folk turned out for the snowshoe trip to Livingstone Springs. Despite a snowfall warning of 4 to 5 inches – it didn’t fall on us until the last part of our trip, and on the drive back home.

A very wet day, but very productive with all the lumber cut on site, and foundation laid to complete almost 50 meters of boardwalk before the end of November.

October 17 was delightful, sunny fall day. 8 people went enthusiastically forth, approximately 9 k to the rustic yet elegant picnic table at midpoint on the trail between UNBC & Otway.
We were in lovely, old stands of spruce, balsalm and fir the entire way as well as the other native floras. Photos by Kim Seibel.

Four hikers from Quesnel met four from Prince George at the Recreation Site beside the Blackwater River. We ambled along, took plenty of pictures, breaks, split up into small groups of two to have debates, and ended up being on the trail for 71/2 hours, kind of pretending that it was still mid-summer. The group of 15 set off just after 9 am under partly cloudy skies with a good amount of smoke haze in the air. Temperatures were great for hiking and the trail was in good shape. The quickest folk were to the lake in about 2 hours and the slowest 2.5 hrs.
