Huble Farm

Description

Located approximately 44 km northeast of Prince George, six km east of Hwy 97 at the end of Mitchell Road.

The Huble Homestead is the southern terminus of the historic Giscome Portage trail, which connected the Fraser River to the Peace River system via Summit Lake. Once an important transportation/supply hub, the Homestead has been largely restored. The Giscome Portage south trailhead is one km east of the Homestead on Mitchell Road. It heads northwest to Hwy 97, through pine, spruce and aspen forests.

Other hikes/snowshoes are available in the Huble Homestead vicinity. Hikers can park in a pullout on the east side of Hwy 97, just south of the Mitchell Road intersection, then travel northeast cross-country until they reach the Fraser River’s west shore. It’s a short trip northeast along the river to the Homestead from there. A longer version of this hike is available by parking at the end of Edric Road, east of Hwy 97 but further south from the pullout. Summer trips to the Homestead offer tours, craft demonstrations, chances to see farm animals and goodies available at the “period” general store, as well as idyllic walks in pastures along the Fraser River.

Trail Conditions

The Giscome Portage trail has been plagued by blowdown in recent years, due to the mountain pine beetle. It can also be wet in summer, but is an excellent cross-country ski trail. As of mid-June, 2017, it’s reportedly in good shape. The routes from Hwy 97 to the Homestead are not developed trails and are perhaps best travelled in winter.

Directions

Travel 38 km north on Highway 97 North till you reach Mitchell Road. Turn right and travel another 6 km till you reach the homestead.
