Progress Report July 15, 2012

Hello everyone, the 3rd and final phase of the Universal Boardwalk has seen 60 meters of boardwalk foundation and most of the 26 foot span bridge constructed.

Decking began last week with about 30 meters expected to be nailed down this week. Work began just as the last of the snow was melting: moving lumber further into the forest with help from Katimavik volunteers; friends with quads moving tons of rocks and gravel to support the bridge abutments, and the services of a Kubota operator in preparing a pathway for the final 200 meters of boardwalk to sit on.

Since the 10th of May, 19 trips ( 23 vehicles ) have been made by Caledonia Ramblers Hiking Club members and Friends of the Ancient Forest to work on the boardwalk – close to 5500 kilometers; 600 hours (2,826 total hours to date ) of volunteer labour taking us to Day #89 of the project that began in May 2010 with 40 meters completed that year, and 80 meters in 2011. Our goal is to build the remaining 336 meters of boardwalk for a total of 456 meters by Thanksgiving this year.

Thanks to the sponsorship, support and contributions from so many of you, the boardwalk is surely and steadily making its way to a Thanksgiving opening. Sincerely, on behalf of the Caledonia Ramblers Hiking Club and the Caledonia Ramblers Trust Friends of the Ancient Forest
