Destination: Mount Murray (Barkerville)
The Caledonia Ramblers will be leading a Moderate/Strenuous (D4d) hike up Mt. Murray (Barkerville) on Sunday, July 7th, approximately 215 km southeast of Prince George. This will be a crossover hike up the Yellowhawk trail to the summit and down the Jubilee trail and will involve a vehicle shuttle. The elevation gain is 685 metres and the total distance is 11 km. As of June 25th, there were several trees down over the Yellowhawk trail, but few created any major obstacles. The Jubilee trail was much clearer. The junction of the trails is a little difficult to find and to get to the Jubilee trail from the summit may involve a brief steep descent from an alpine ridge top along a grassy slope. But the view from the summit is beautiful. Participants should bring a day backpack, lunch and snacks, lots to drink, rain gear, extra clothing, insect repellent, sun screen and possibly hiking poles, gaiters and bear spray. Prince George hikers will depart from the City Hall parking lot at 7 a.m. and will rendezvous with possible Quesnel hikers at the junction of Schemenauer Road and Highway 26 (the Barkerville Highway), where there’s a parking lot off Schemenauer Road, around 8:30 to 8:45 a.m. The group will then continue on to the Yellowhawk trailhead.
The carpool fee is $20 for Prince George participants, $10 for Quesnel participants
