Humbug Ridge

Description

In good weather, Humbug Ridge provides spectacular views of the Rockies to the north and the Fraser River valley and the Cariboo Mountains to the south. It is possible to walk for many kilometres along the ridge, so it is worthwhile to at least spend one night on the ridge.

Viking Ridge

Description

The trail is located about 85 kms southeast of Prince George, by Highway 16 in Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den Prov. Park. The trail, located and cleared in 1981, goes up the northwest slope of Viking Ridge to Caribou meadows at 1456 m, a small lake at 1642 m, and the summit at 1886 m. Open ridges lead beyond the summit giving excellent views of the Rocky Mountain Trench and mountains in all directions. The trail is slightly easier then the Sugarbowl Trail. This area and Sugarbowl are good areas to see caribou and other wildlife, but meadows with abundant flowers are scarce.

Mount Murray (Pine Pass)

Description

The trail ascends the highway embankment on the northeast side and enters the forest. After 100m, the trail crosses the BCR tracks and then switchbacks up a very steep slope for 300m (1000 ft), thereafter ascending steadily through timber, eventually passing by a good lookout point after 2km. The open alpine terrain is reached at 1500m (5000ft) elevation. From the end of the cleared trail, there are 3 options:

  1. Continue up the ridge to the 1st summit at 1722m (5650 ft) which provides stunning views.

Longworth Lookout

Description

Located near Longworth, on the north side of the Fraser River, about 85 kms east of Prince George. Accessed via the Giscome-Upper Fraser Highway and the Sinclair/Longworth Road. It is a good trail with moderate to steep grades that leads to a ridge above the tree line at elevation 1700m (5600 ft). A short (750 m) walk leads to a Forest Service lookout at 1780 m (5935 ft). It provides excellent views of the Cariboo Mountains to the south, the Rockies to the east and north, and the Fraser River below.
